Under Nazi occupation, Jos was an employee of the Wilhelm-Luxemburg railway company. During the Battle of the Bulge, he found work at an American medical hospital. In Summer 1945, he worked for a short period as a steward in the Hotel Alpha in Luxembourg City.

After his compulsory military service had expired, he voluntarily enlisted for a 3-year period, even joining the second contingent to fight alongside the UN troops in Korea. Overseas, he took part in several combat patrols, during which he was in charge of a section (group of 10 men). After his return from Korea, he completed an impressive career in the Army. In 1968 he was transferred to the police as Brigadier-Chef. In 1978, he was promoted to Inspecteur, before retiring in 1983. In April 1988, he was granted the honorary title of Adjudant-Major.
