In May 1951, Camille volunteered for the Luxembourg Army. Camille’s motivation to join the forces was the financial support he could provide to his family, which at the time was in dire straits.

During his stay in Korea, he sent several postcards to his mother, bearing witness of the conditions on the battlefield and providing exceptional insight into the state of mind and feelings of the young soldiers.

He was promoted to Soldat de 1re Classe in June 1952. Back in Luxembourg, Camille worked for the Compagnie Nationale des Chemins de Fer (CFL) and was recalled by the Army for small field manoeuvres. After being promoted to Caporal de Réserve in 1954 and marrying on 19 February 1955, he permanently left the Army in October. His entire life, Camille suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder and other crises, triggered by the horrors he endured during his service in Korea. His wife Anni Berg remembered his time in Korea as a period which “has only damaged him”.
