Joseph was conscripted into the Army in August 1947. Being attached to the Ist Battalion until August 1948, he re-enlisted as a volunteer, spending some time stationed in Bitburg, Western Germany.

From September 1950 to September 1951, Jos served in the first contingent in the Korean War. Being assigned a driver, he was in charge of ensuring transportation of high military officials between camps and frontlines.

On his return, Jos was discharged from his military service and henceforth devoted his time to be a gardener. Later he met his wife Maria Agnes Hendriks, with whom he had a son.
