Richard joined the Luxembourg Army on 15 July 1949. In 1952, he volunteered for the second contingent and boarded the plane for the Far East on 14 March 1952.
Following his return from Korea, he remained in the Army, being assigned to several different branches until 1957, when he was finally detached to the customs administration. Until his premature death, he worked for the steelwork company ARBED.
In 1967, he married Marie-Thérèse Thill, with whom he had a son.
