During an attack at Chokko-Ri on 26 September 1952, René and five other Luxembourgish soldiers were wounded by enemy mortar shrapnel. According to the statement of his superior officer, Lieutenant Lutty, René was wounded while rescuing a comrade.

Back in Luxembourg, Rene intended to continue his military career, but due to his father’s health, he decided to temporarily leave the Army in 1953 to spend more time with his family. In July 1957 and October 1958, René was recalled by the Army for field manoeuvres of 21 days each.
