As a student, Jean was called up for compulsory military service and assigned to the IInd Battalion. After completing his basic training in October 1949, he was transferred to the Corps de la Garde for another year. In late September 1950, he enlisted as a volunteer for the first contingent. From embarking on the Kamina in Antwerp until the journey back home in September 1951, Jean immortalized his war experiences abroad in a comprehensive diary.

After returning home, he stayed for another six months in the military until he was released on 28  March 1952. Between 1954 and 1955, he was called in twice to participate in military manoeuvres.

Prior to his military release in 1952, he was promoted Lieutenant de Réserve, which, even though he could resume work as a civilian, kept him attached to the troops. On 9 January 1961, Jean was officially withdrawn from the list of reserve officers by Grand-Ducal order.
