Outside active combat, whether it be counter-guerrilla action, defence of frontline sectors or offensive sweeps against North Korean and Chinese positions, the soldiers’ daily life was marked by phases of respite disrupted only by sporadic enemy artillery fire. Observing the front, carrying out reconnaissance patrols punctuated by debriefings and fortifying existing positions were recurrent activities that awaited the volunteers of the 2nd contingent. To combat boredom, music, card games, reading magazines and newspapers - including the Luxembourg press which was specially dispatched from the Grand Duchy - and taking pictures documenting their experiences in Korea were welcome sources of entertainment. Religious services by the military chaplain also helped to boost morale.
